Coolant, a mixture of water and antifreeze, circulates through the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat. A water pump circulates the coolant throughout the system. The thermostat regulates coolant flow, opening when the engine reaches its optimal operating temperature and closing when it's cold. Cooling fans, often electric or engine-driven, assist in drawing air through the radiator, especially at low speeds or when the vehicle is stationary. Hoses connect the various components, allowing for the movement of coolant.

The cooling system operates by continuously circulating coolant. As the engine heats up, the coolant absorbs this heat. The heated coolant then flows to the radiator, where it is cooled by air passing over its fins. The cooled coolant returns to the engine, restarting the cycle.
