Izlaz

Izlaz is a noun used in Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian to denote an exit. It refers to the act of going out as well as to the opening or passage that allows someone to leave a space, such as a door, corridor, or staircase. In architecture, transportation, and everyday life, izlaz designates both the opening and the route that provides egress. Common phrases include glavni izlaz (main exit), izlazna vrata (exit doors), and sigurnosni izlaz (emergency exit). In signage, the word izlaz is frequently written on signs to indicate the exit.

Etymology: The term derives from the prefix iz- meaning "out" combined with a root related to movement or passage, and is cognate with related terms across South Slavic languages.

Usage: In safety regulations and building codes, clear marking of exits and unblocked routes is essential; occupants must know the location of the nearest izlaz. In everyday language, izlaz is also used metaphorically to indicate a solution or way out of a difficult situation, as in “naći izlaz iz problema” (to find an exit/way out of a problem).
