IxodesZecken is a genus of ticks belonging to the family Ixodidae, commonly known as hard ticks. These ticks are ectoparasites, meaning they live on the external surface of their hosts and feed on blood. The genus Ixodes is particularly noteworthy due to its role as vectors for various diseases affecting both humans and animals.

Species within the Ixodes genus are characterized by a lack of festoons, which are small, rectangular indentations on the posterior edge of the dorsal exoskeleton found in some other tick genera. They typically possess an ornate dorsal shield, though this can vary in prominence depending on the species and life stage. Ixodes ticks have a complex life cycle that generally involves four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each parasitic stage requires a blood meal from a suitable host to progress to the next.

Several Ixodes species are of significant medical and veterinary importance. Ixodes ricinus, the castor bean tick, is widespread in Europe and is a vector for diseases such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Ixodes scapularis, the black-legged tick or deer tick, is prevalent in eastern North America and transmits Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Similarly, Ixodes pacificus, found on the Pacific coast of North America, also transmits Lyme disease and other pathogens. The diverse host range of Ixodes ticks, which can include mammals, birds, and reptiles, contributes to their ability to spread a wide array of pathogens across different ecosystems.
