Iwojima
Iwo Jima, known today as Iōtō, is a small volcanic island in the western Pacific Ocean, part of the Japanese archipelago. It gained international recognition as the site of one of the most brutal battles of World War II, the Battle of Iwo Jima, which took place from February 19 to March 26, 1945. This pivotal confrontation saw United States Marines and Army soldiers engage Japanese forces defending heavily fortified positions on the island.
The strategic importance of Iwo Jima lay in its location, midway between Japan and Allied air bases
The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with the United States suffering over 28,000 killed
