Itseprimauksen, often translated as self-priming, refers to a property of certain pumps that allows them to operate without needing to be manually filled with liquid before starting. This capability is crucial in applications where the pump might be located above the liquid source or where the liquid level can fluctuate. Self-priming pumps achieve this by incorporating mechanisms that can expel air from the pump casing and suction line, thereby creating a vacuum that draws the liquid up into the pump.

There are several common designs for self-priming pumps. One type uses an internal recirculation system. Upon startup, the impeller rotates, circulating liquid already within the pump casing. This circulation creates an air-liquid mixture which is then expelled, and as air is removed, the vacuum builds, drawing in the surrounding liquid. Another method involves an external priming system, such as a small auxiliary pump or a hand primer, that can be used to evacuate air from the system before the main pump engages. Some centrifugal pumps can be designed to be self-priming through specific impeller and casing geometries that allow them to trap air and expel it during initial operation.

The advantage of self-priming capability is significant in terms of convenience and operational efficiency. It eliminates the need for manual priming, which can be time-consuming and inconvenient, especially in remote or automated systems. This makes them ideal for tasks like draining flooded areas, transferring liquids from tanks, and in various industrial and agricultural applications where consistent and reliable operation is essential. However, self-priming pumps may sometimes have a lower initial flow rate compared to non-priming pumps as they work to establish the prime.
