Isäntäpathogen

Isäntäpathogen is a term used to describe a pathogenic organism that infects a host, causing disease or compromising health through interaction with host tissues and the immune system. The concept emphasizes the relationship between the organism and its host rather than the pathogen in isolation. Pathogens can be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, and an isäntäpathogen requires host-compatible conditions to replicate and cause pathology.

Key features of host–pathogen interactions include host range, tissue tropism, and virulence. The ability of a pathogen to infect a given host depends on factors from both sides: pathogen traits such as adhesion molecules, toxins, and immune evasion, and host factors such as receptors, immune status, and genetic background. Pathogens may be obligatory parasites or opportunistic pathogens that primarily affect immunocompromised individuals.

Interactions often involve coevolution, shaping host specificity and pathogen adaptation. Host defenses include innate and adaptive immunity, barrier tissues, and microbiota.
