Isyyspääte

Isyyspääte is a term used in Finnish linguistics to refer to the suffix -isyys, a productive nominalizing ending that forms abstract nouns expressing a state, condition, or quality of being.

Formation and usage: The suffix attaches to stems of adjectives and certain base nouns to yield abstract nouns such as rehellisyys and vihamielisyys. The resulting nouns denote a general property or disposition rather than a concrete object. Isyyspääte coexists with other nominalizing suffixes, notably -isuus, and the choice between them can carry subtle nuance rather than strict rules.

Nuance and scope: -isyys often conveys a broad or evaluative state; the precise meaning depends on the base word. The suffix is common in written Finnish and in formal terms describing character, attitude, or tendency. As with many Finnish suffixes, there are idiolectal and register-based differences in preference for -isyys versus other endings.
