Isquémico

Isquémico is a Spanish adjective that translates to "ischemic" in English. It refers to a condition caused by insufficient blood flow to a part of the body, leading to a lack of oxygen and nutrients. This reduced blood supply is often due to a blockage or narrowing of blood vessels.

The most common association with the term isquémico is with strokes, known medically as accidents cerebrovasculares isquémicos. These occur when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and causing cell damage. Similarly, in cardiology, isquémico describes heart conditions like angina or myocardial infarction (heart attack), where the heart muscle does not receive enough blood due to narrowed or blocked coronary arteries.

Isquémico conditions can affect various organs and tissues, including the intestines (intestinal ischemia), limbs (peripheral ischemia), and eyes. Symptoms vary depending on the affected area but often include pain, numbness, weakness, and changes in skin color. Prompt medical attention is crucial for isquémico events as timely intervention can limit tissue damage and improve outcomes. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like CT scans, MRIs, or angiograms, along with other medical assessments. Treatment strategies focus on restoring blood flow and managing the underlying cause.
