Isotrooppisiin is a Finnish term that translates to "isotropic" in English. It refers to a material or substance that exhibits uniform properties in all directions. This means that regardless of the direction in which a measurement is taken, the physical characteristics of an isotropic material will be the same.

Examples of isotropic properties include mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and refractive index. If a material is isotropic, its response to external stimuli will be consistent, irrespective of the orientation of the applied force or field. For instance, an isotropic material under tensile stress will deform equally in all directions perpendicular to the applied force.

Many common materials are considered isotropic in everyday applications. Gases and liquids are generally isotropic due to the random motion of their molecules, which lack any preferred orientation. Amorphous solids, such as glass, also tend to be isotropic because their atomic structure is disordered. However, crystalline materials can be anisotropic, meaning their properties vary depending on the crystallographic direction, due to their ordered atomic arrangements.
