Isoristische

Isoristische is a term used in musicology to describe the isorhythmic technique found in medieval polyphony. It refers to the practice of combining two independent repeating patterns: a rhythmic pattern, called the talea, and a melodic or pitch sequence, called the color. The talea and color may start together but often have different lengths, so their alignment recurs at irregular intervals and over long spans. This creates a structural unity built from repetition rather than a single recurring melodic motif.

Origin and usage: Isorhythm emerged in medieval France during the late 13th and 14th centuries and became a notable feature of Ars Nova practice. It is chiefly associated with motets and certain polyphonic settings where composers sought to organize extended sections through orderly repetition. While not universal in all works, isorhythmic design is a recognizable analytical lens for a subset of 14th-century repertoire.

Technical aspects: In an isorhythmic design, the talea prescribes a sequence of rhythmic values, whereas the color prescribes a sequence of pitches. The lengths of the talea and color can be relatively prime, producing a cycle that only completes after several repetitions of each stream. The technique often intersects with existing mensural notation practices and can influence the overall architecture, phrases, and cadential points of the piece.
