Isolationszimmer

An Isolationszimmer, or isolation room, is a designated space within a healthcare facility or other institution designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. These rooms are typically equipped with specialized ventilation systems that maintain negative air pressure, meaning air flows into the room from the surrounding environment, not out. This prevents airborne pathogens from escaping the room. Additionally, isolation rooms often feature an anteroom or vestibule, serving as an airlock for donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gowns, gloves, and masks.

Patients placed in an isolation room are typically diagnosed with or suspected of having a highly contagious illness. The specific type of isolation employed depends on the mode of transmission of the pathogen, whether it be airborne, droplet, or contact. For example, airborne isolation is used for diseases like tuberculosis or measles, requiring the negative pressure ventilation. Droplet isolation is for illnesses spread through larger respiratory particles, and contact isolation is for infections transmitted by direct touch. Strict protocols govern entry and exit from isolation rooms to ensure the safety of healthcare workers, other patients, and visitors. The use of isolation rooms is a critical component of infection control strategies in healthcare settings.
