Geography. The system comprises eleven main islands plus smaller islets, totaling under 700 square kilometers of land. It lies in a subtropical maritime zone with a distinct wet season and a drier period. Islands range from low coral atolls to volcanic highlands; surrounding waters support fisheries and biodiversity.
