Iskunäänieristys, which translates to impact sound insulation in English, refers to the reduction of noise that travels through structures, particularly floors and ceilings. This type of noise is commonly generated by footsteps, dropped objects, or moving furniture. Unlike airborne sound, which travels through the air, impact sound is a vibration that propagates through the building's materials.

Effective impact sound insulation is crucial for maintaining a comfortable and peaceful indoor environment, especially in multi-story buildings like apartments, hotels, and offices. The primary goal is to minimize the transmission of these vibrational noises from one space to another.

Various methods and materials are employed to achieve good impact sound insulation. These often involve creating decoupling between the sound source and the receiving space. Common strategies include using resilient underlays beneath flooring materials, such as specialized foam or rubber mats. These underlays absorb some of the impact energy before it can transfer into the structural elements.
