Isdekket

Isdekket is a Norwegian term used to describe a surface that is covered by ice. In meteorology and geography it commonly refers to sea ice, lake ice and river ice. The extent and duration of an isdekket surface depend on air temperature, water temperature, salinity, wind, and solar radiation. Sea ice forms by freezing seawater; it thickens through seasonal growth and can drift with currents. Lake and river ice form when ambient temperatures fall below freezing for extended periods, with thickness ranging from a few centimeters to several decimeters, depending on duration and conditions.

Seasonal cycles: In temperate and polar regions, ice cover typically forms in late autumn, reaches maximum extent in winter, and melts in spring. In recent decades, climate warming has altered timing and extent, leading to shorter snow-ice periods, thinner ice, and in some regions, reduced or irregular isdekket occurrences.

Monitoring: Isdekket is monitored by satellite observations (passive microwave sensors) and ground measurements; thickness is estimated via radar and gravimetric methods. Isdekket affects albedo, heat exchange, and habitat; it influences shipping routes, fisheries, and freshwater ecosystems. Rapid changes can increase flood risk during thaws, and reduce habitat for species adapted to ice cover.
