The term is a neologism derived from irreducibilis, Latin for unable to be reduced, and is used in both singular and plural form as irreducibla. It is typically employed in discussions of hypothetical or experimental sign systems rather than as a description of established natural language.

Key properties include atomicity (indivisible within the theory), stable reference, and contextual robustness. Irreducibla differ from morphemes, which are built from smaller meaningful parts, and from phonemes, which lack inherent semantic content.
