Ironguarding

Ironguarding is a strategic defensive maneuver in certain combat-oriented games, particularly those involving real-time strategy or turn-based tactics. The core concept of ironguarding involves positioning a unit or group of units in a way that they absorb incoming damage and protect more fragile or valuable units located behind them. This defensive formation is designed to minimize losses and maintain offensive pressure by preventing enemy units from bypassing the frontline defenders and targeting key assets.

The effectiveness of ironguarding often depends on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the units involved. Units with high armor, health, or damage reduction are ideal candidates for the front lines. Conversely, units with high offensive capabilities but low survivability, such as artillery, spellcasters, or snipers, are typically placed in the rear, shielded by the ironguard. The success of this tactic requires careful unit placement, awareness of enemy unit types and their attack patterns, and an understanding of the terrain, which can sometimes be used to further enhance defensive positions.

Ironguarding is not simply about placing units in front of others. It often involves anticipating enemy advances and reacting proactively. For example, if an enemy is known to have powerful ranged units, an ironguard might be positioned to block line of sight while faster units flank or engage the enemy at close range. In some games, specific unit abilities or technologies can further enhance the effectiveness of an ironguarding strategy, such as abilities that increase defensive stats or taunt enemies.
