Ionizingradiation

Ionizing radiation is radiation with enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions. It includes particulate radiation—alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons—and electromagnetic radiation such as gamma rays and X-rays. In some discussions, high-energy ultraviolet radiation is also considered ionizing, though most safety frameworks focus on the major categories above.

Natural sources provide background exposure: cosmic rays, terrestrial radionuclides in soil and rocks, and internal radionuclides in the body (such as potassium-40). Artificial sources include medical X-ray imaging and radiotherapy, industrial radiography, materials processing, sterilization, and the nuclear fuel cycle.

Ionizing interactions can damage biological matter by ionizing molecules and generating reactive species, particularly in water. This can lead to DNA damage and other cellular effects. Health consequences depend on dose, rate, and tissue sensitivity. Acute high doses can cause radiation sickness; chronic or high cumulative exposure increases cancer risk. Some effects have thresholds, while others are stochastic with no clear threshold at low doses.

Measurement and protection: absorbed dose is measured in grays (Gy). Dose equivalent and effective dose use the sievert (Sv) to reflect biological risk. Source activity is measured in becquerels (Bq). Safety practices emphasize time, distance, and shielding, and follow the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable). Regulators, including the ICRP and IAEA, set guidance and dose limits, with national authorities enforcing standards.

Applications include medical imaging (X-ray, CT), nuclear medicine (PET, SPECT), radiation therapy, industrial radiography, sterilization, and scientific research. Ionizing radiation provides significant benefits in medicine and industry but requires careful risk management and safety culture.
