The etymology of the name is believed to be a compound of the archaic word “inverter” meaning “reverser” and the patronymic suffix “‑et,” indicating descent or belonging. The name may have historically been used to denote families involved with early mechanical devices that involved reversals of motion or direction.

In modern usage the surname is relatively uncommon. Prominent bearers include the late Erik Invertereket (1942–2018), a Swedish engineer who contributed to the development of early industrial power converters, and his daughter, Lena Invertereket, a Norwegian environmental scientist known for her research on renewable energy systems. Though no longer widely reported in mainstream press, the name occasionally appears in specialized journals on electrical engineering and in genealogy publications.

The term “invertereket” can also refer colloquially to a specific type of electromechanical inverter used in 19th‑century steam engines. These devices were renowned for their reliability and were deployed in small coastal ports for signal regulation.
