Inverterbraters

Inverterbraters are a fictional group of small aquatic invertebrates used in speculative biology to illustrate alternative body plans. Described as belonging to a hypothetical phylum called Inverterbrata, they are defined by an inverted arrangement of several fundamental systems, most notably respiration and feeding structures.

Morphology and anatomy are the defining features. Individuals are typically 2–15 mm long with soft, translucent bodies. The ventral surface bears a belt of plate-like elements that enclose respiratory filaments, while the dorsal side carries the digestive tract and sensory organs. Their mouthparts and feeding apparatus are oriented toward the substrate because of the inverted body plan, a configuration imagined to affect feeding mechanics and habitat use. They lack a rigid exoskeleton and rely on a flexible cuticle for protection.

Habitat and distribution. Inverterbraters are imagined to inhabit clean freshwater and brackish environments with abundant detritus, such as leaf litter, sediment, and submerged vegetation. They are considered benthic dwellers, preferring sheltered microhabitats with stable, low-flow conditions that support microalgae and microbial biofilms.

Ecology and behavior. They are described as detritivores and microalgae grazer opportunists, feeding by scraping surfaces with their ventral apparatus. Reproduction is proposed as direct development, with eggs hatching into miniature adults rather than undergoing free-swimming larval stages. Life cycles are typically short, emphasizing rapid local population turnover in stable habitats.

Taxonomic status and significance. As a construct of speculative biology, inverterbraters serve as a thought experiment to explore how inversion of organ systems might influence ecology, behavior, and evolutionary constraints. They are not known to describe any real organisms.
