Inversiotekniikalla, which translates to "inversion technique" in English, refers to a set of methods used in various fields, particularly in signal processing, geophysics, and image analysis, to infer the properties of an underlying system or object from observed data. The core idea is to reverse or invert a known forward model that describes how a system produces observable data from its properties. For instance, if we have a mathematical model that predicts seismic wave travel times based on geological structure, inversion techniques would use measured travel times to estimate the underlying geological structure.

These techniques are often employed when direct measurement of the desired properties is difficult or impossible. The process typically involves defining an objective function that quantifies the difference between the observed data and the data predicted by the forward model with a given set of system properties. Optimization algorithms are then used to minimize this objective function, thereby finding the system properties that best explain the observed data.

Challenges in applying inversion techniques include the ill-posed nature of many inverse problems. This means that solutions might not be unique, might be unstable (small changes in data lead to large changes in the inferred properties), or might not exist at all. To address these issues, regularization methods are often incorporated to introduce constraints or prior information, guiding the inversion towards a more stable and meaningful solution.
