Invaliderung, in the context of German social security law, refers to the process by which an individual is officially recognized as having a permanent or long-term disability that significantly impairs their ability to work or participate in daily life. This determination is typically made by the German statutory pension insurance (*Deutsche Rentenversicherung*) or other relevant authorities, such as the Federal Employment Agency (*Bundesagentur für Arbeit*), depending on the specific circumstances.

The assessment is based on the severity and expected duration of the disability, as outlined in the *Sozialgesetzbuch (SGB) IX*, particularly in Section 15, which defines criteria for recognizing a disability. To qualify, an individual’s functional limitations must be expected to last at least six months and must result in a reduction of their earning capacity by at least 50%. The evaluation considers medical findings, functional impairments, and the ability to perform work-related tasks, often involving a medical examination by a physician appointed by the pension insurance.

Once recognized, the individual may be entitled to various benefits, including disability pension (*Erwerbsminderungsrente*), vocational rehabilitation measures, or other forms of support. The process involves submitting medical documentation and undergoing an assessment, which may include interviews and evaluations by medical professionals. Appeals are possible if the initial decision is contested.

Invaliderung is distinct from other forms of disability recognition, such as the issuance of a *Grad der Behinderung (GdB)* certificate, which assesses the overall impact of a disability on daily life rather than work capacity. While the GdB is used for social and tax benefits, invaliderung specifically addresses employment-related limitations and entitlements. The decision is binding and can be reviewed periodically if the individual’s condition changes.
