The primary functions of intonation include distinguishing between statements and questions, expressing surprise or doubt, and highlighting particular words or phrases for emphasis. For example, a rising intonation at the end of a sentence typically signals a question, while a falling intonation often indicates a statement. Similarly, a speaker might use a sharp rise in pitch to express surprise or disbelief.

Intonation also plays a significant role in the emotional coloring of speech. Happiness, sadness, anger, and other emotions can be conveyed through variations in pitch, loudness, and speed. A rapid, high-pitched delivery might suggest excitement or nervousness, while a slow, low-pitched delivery could indicate sadness or seriousness.
