Interósea

Interósea is a term derived from Latin, meaning "between the bones." It most commonly refers to structures found in the spaces between bones in the human body, particularly the interosseous membranes and muscles.

The interosseous membrane is a broad, flat sheet of fibrous tissue that separates two parallel bones. The most prominent examples are the interosseous membrane of the forearm, located between the radius and ulna, and the interosseous membrane of the leg, situated between the tibia and fibula. These membranes serve several functions: they provide a strong attachment site for muscles, help to distribute forces between the bones, and prevent excessive movement.

Interosseous muscles are also found in these interosseous spaces. In the hand, the dorsal and palmar interossei muscles are located between the metacarpal bones. In the foot, similar interossei muscles exist between the metatarsal bones. These muscles play crucial roles in fine motor control, such as finger and toe abduction (spreading) and adduction (bringing together), as well as assisting in flexion and extension of the digits.

Injuries to interosseous structures, such as tears of the interosseous membrane or strains of the interosseous muscles, can occur due to trauma or overuse. These injuries can lead to pain, weakness, and instability in the affected limb. The study of interosseous anatomy and function is important in fields such as orthopedics, physical therapy, and sports medicine for diagnosis and treatment of related conditions.
