Interimziele

Interimziele are interim or milestone goals used to guide progress toward a larger objective within a defined timeframe. The term comes from German, combining Interim (temporary) and Ziel (goal). In project management, strategy execution, and organizational development, interimziele help break a long-term objective into manageable steps, enabling progress tracking, resource planning, and course correction.

Their key characteristics include being specific, measurable, time-bound, and aligned with the overarching Endziel (final goal). They function as checkpoints indicating whether a project is on track and typically serve as building blocks or Teilziele (subgoals) that lead toward the main objective. Regular review intervals, such as monthly or quarterly assessments, are common to ensure relevance and timeliness.

Interimziele are used across contexts, including product development, organizational change, and strategic planning. For example, with the Endziel of releasing a software product in a given quarter, interimziele might include completing the requirements specification by the end of the first quarter, finalizing the system architecture by the middle of the second quarter, and delivering a beta version by the third quarter. Such steps help allocate resources, manage risks, and adjust plans as conditions evolve.

In relation to other planning terms, interimziele are distinct from single tasks and from critical events marked by meilensteine (milestones). In practice, different organizations may use these terms with some overlap: interimziele refer to progressive goals along a path, teilziele to smaller steps within a phase, and meilensteine to pivotal moments that signal major progress or decision points. Careful definition and regular updating are essential to keep interimziele meaningful and aligned with the overall strategy.
