Interactieenergies, often translated as interaction energies, refers to the energy associated with the forces between different entities. These entities can range from subatomic particles to macroscopic objects. In physics and chemistry, interaction energies are crucial for understanding the behavior and stability of systems.

For instance, in atomic and molecular physics, interaction energies describe the forces between electrons and nuclei, or between different atoms and molecules. These energies dictate whether a bond will form, the strength of that bond, and the molecular geometry. The van der Waals forces, for example, are a type of interaction energy that governs the attraction between neutral molecules. Similarly, electrostatic interactions, arising from charged particles, play a significant role in ionic compounds and the behavior of charged plasmas.
