Inlayer

Inlayer is a term employed in several disciplines to denote an inner or interior layer within a stratified object. It is not a standardized technical term with a single fixed definition, and its precise meaning depends on the context in which it is used. Broadly, inlayer can refer to any material, component, or feature located within the interior layers of a multi-layered structure, as opposed to an exterior surface or outer layer.

In materials science and engineering, inlayers are the plies, cores, or intermediate materials that lie between outer face sheets in laminates, composites, or multilayer devices. The properties of an inlayer—such as stiffness, thermal insulation, or electrical behavior—often significantly influence the overall performance of the assembly. Damage that propagates within an internal layer or at the interfaces with adjacent layers is a common concern in design and maintenance.

In dentistry, the established term for a specific restoration is inlay, not inlayer. Inlay restorations are indirect fillings fabricated outside the mouth and cemented into prepared cavities. Materials used for inlays include porcelain, composite resin, and gold. The term inlayer may appear in informal or erroneous contexts but is not widely recognized as a technical synonym for inlay in professional practice.

In electronics and manufacturing, inlayer can describe features or components embedded within a particular layer of a device or substrate, such as embedded circuitry or conductive paths situated inside a layer rather than on its surface. This usage highlights internal architecture rather than external interfaces.
