Injektionsställen refer to the specific locations on the body where a substance is administered via injection. The choice of injection site depends on the type of injection, the volume of the medication, its properties, and the intended speed of absorption. Common injection sites include the deltoid muscle in the upper arm, the vastus lateralis muscle in the thigh, the ventrogluteal or dorsogluteal muscles in the buttocks, and the subcutaneous tissue in areas like the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

For intramuscular injections, the muscle chosen should be large enough to accommodate the needle without hitting bone or major blood vessels. Factors like muscle mass, vascularity, and the patient's position are considered. Subcutaneous injections are placed into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, allowing for slower absorption than intramuscular injections. Intradermal injections, used for tests like allergy or tuberculosis screening, are given into the dermis, the layer of skin just below the epidermis.

Proper technique for selecting and preparing injection sites is crucial to ensure patient safety and medication efficacy. This includes cleaning the site with an antiseptic wipe, rotating sites to prevent tissue damage with repeated injections, and using the correct needle length and gauge for the chosen site and medication. Adverse reactions at injection sites, such as pain, redness, swelling, or bruising, can occur but are usually mild and temporary. More serious complications are rare when proper procedures are followed.
