Injectievolume

Injectievolume, often expressed in milliliters (mL), is the amount of fluid delivered to a patient via an injection. It reflects the prescribed dose, drug concentration, and route of administration, and it influences the rate and extent of drug absorption as well as local tissue tolerance.

The injection route determines feasible volumes. Intramuscular injections typically accommodate greater volumes than subcutaneous or intradermal injections, while intravenous injections may be delivered as a bolus or as a controlled infusion, with the total volume corresponding to the dose.

Typical volume ranges are route- and patient-dependent. For adults, intramuscular injections commonly range from about 0.5 to 3 mL; vaccines are often 0.5 to 1 mL. Subcutaneous injections are generally around 0.5 to 1.5 mL. Larger volumes may be used for certain medications or specific sites, but excessive volumes can increase pain, tissue distension, and absorption variability. Injections in children or smaller patients use proportionally smaller volumes.

Several factors influence the chosen injection volume, including patient size and tissue characteristics, site, drug viscosity, and the need to minimize local adverse effects such as pain or tissue injury. Proper technique, syringe and needle selection, and dose calculation help ensure that the intended dose is delivered safely and effectively.
