Inhalaatori

Inhalaatori, or inhaler in English, is a handheld medical device that delivers medication to the lungs. It is used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD. Inhalers are available as metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), dry powder inhalers (DPIs), and soft mist inhalers (SMIs). MDIs release a measured aerosol dose with a propellant; DPIs deliver powdered medicine that is inhaled; SMIs produce a slow, fine mist.

The medication is intended to act in the airways, providing rapid relief or long-term control. Common drugs include beta-agonist bronchodilators for quick relief and inhaled corticosteroids for inflammation, with combination inhalers giving both effects.

Technique is device-specific but accuracy matters. Typical steps for MDIs: exhale away, actuate while inhaling slowly, hold breath for several seconds, and wait between puffs; spacers can help. DPIs require a strong, deep inhalation; SMIs are breath-actuated. Regular cleaning, proper storage, and checking dose counters are advised. Rinsing the mouth after corticosteroids reduces thrush risk.

Regulation and environmental notes: Inhalers are regulated medical devices. Improper use reduces effectiveness and may increase side effects. Some MDIs use environmentally friendlier propellants today, though older types used ozone-depleting substances.
