Inhaalspoor

Anhaalspoor is a railway term used in Dutch to describe a track that runs parallel to the main line and is connected to it at both ends by turnouts, forming a short siding. Its primary purpose is to enable trains to overtake, meet, or pass each other on single-track sections, effectively acting as a passing loop. Inhaalspoor is commonly located near stations, junctions, or other strategic points where timetable conflicts may occur.

In operation, a faster or following train may move onto the inhaalspoor to let a slower train continue on the main line, or a meeting train from the opposite direction may use the siding to pass. Once the required movement is complete, trains re-enter the main track. The exact maneuver is governed by railway signaling and interlocking systems to prevent conflicts and ensure safety.

Design aspects of inhaalspoor include adequate length to accommodate the longest train expected to use it, sufficient clearance to avoid blocking the adjacent line, and proper protection with signals and switches. Depending on the line, the siding may be electrified or unelectrified and requires regular maintenance, drainage, and monitoring of clearances.

Benefits of implementing an inhaalspoor include improved timetable reliability and increased capacity on single-track routes, enabling more flexible operations without building a full double track. Limitations include the space required for the siding and the need for compatible signaling and control systems.
