Infällningar

Infällningar, also known as inlays or onlays in restorative dentistry, are indirect restorations used to repair teeth with decay or damage that is too extensive for a simple filling but not severe enough to require a crown. These custom-made restorations are fabricated in a dental laboratory from materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold, and then cemented into place by a dentist.

The primary difference between an inlay and an onlay lies in their coverage. An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth, typically filling the chewing surface between the cusps. An onlay, on the other hand, covers one or more cusps of the tooth, extending over the cusps to provide more extensive coverage.

The procedure for an infällning begins with the dentist preparing the damaged tooth by removing decay or old fillings. An impression of the prepared tooth is then taken, along with an impression of the opposing teeth and a bite registration. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the infällning is precisely crafted to match the shape, color, and fit of the prepared tooth. A temporary filling is placed in the tooth while the infällning is being made.

Once the infällning is ready, the patient returns to the dentist. The temporary filling is removed, and the infällning is checked for fit and bite. After ensuring a proper fit and occlusion, the infällning is bonded or cemented permanently to the tooth. Infällningar are a durable and aesthetically pleasing option for restoring damaged teeth, offering a conservative alternative to crowns. They help to preserve natural tooth structure and restore the tooth's function and appearance.
