Infrapunavalolla

Infrapunavalolla is a Finnish term used to describe lighting conditions or imaging performed under infrared light. It is formed from infrapunavalo (infrared light) and the adessive suffix -lla, indicating the context of illumination.

In practice, infrapunavalolla means illumination that lies at wavelengths longer than about 700 nanometers, beyond human vision. The infrared radiation is largely invisible to the eye but can be captured by infrared-sensitive cameras or sensors.

Applications include photography and cinematography in low light or at night, wildlife observation, security surveillance, and industrial inspection where conventional lighting is undesirable or disruptive.

Characteristics: infrared lighting often uses LEDs or special lamps; cameras used must be sensitive to infrared or fitted with infrared-pass filters; images under infrapunavalolla tend to be grayscale or show contrast based on IR reflectance, depending on sensor and filtering.

Limitations and considerations: IR reflectance differs from visible light; color information is usually lost; some materials are IR-transparent or IR-opaque; safety notes: typical IR sources used for illumination are safe for humans in normal consumer use.
