Inflaatioennusteita, or inflation forecasts, are predictions made by economists, central banks, and financial institutions regarding the future rate of inflation. These forecasts are based on a combination of macroeconomic indicators such as current inflation rates, wage growth, commodity prices, monetary policy stance, fiscal policy, and global economic conditions. The goal is to anticipate changes in the price level of goods and services, which informs policy decisions and investment strategies.

Central banks, such as the European Central Bank, the Bank of Finland, and national institutions in other countries, regularly publish inflation outlooks as part of their policy communications. Their forecasts typically cover a short- to medium-term horizon, ranging from the next quarter to several years ahead. They use statistical models and economic theory to estimate the trajectory of core inflation—excluding volatile items like food and energy—to gauge whether price stability targets are being met.

Private sector forecasters, including financial research firms and consultancy agencies, also provide inflation expectations. They often use market-based data, such as the yield curve or inflation-linked bond yields, to derive implied inflation rates. These market-derived forecasts reflect the consensus of market participants and can differ from official predictions due to different assumptions or a greater emphasis on short-term volatility.

Policymakers use these forecasts to adjust monetary policy tools, such as setting key interest rates, conducting open market operations, or implementing forward guidance. Accurate inflation forecasts help maintain price stability, support growth, and protect purchasing power. However, forecasts are inherently uncertain; unexpected shocks like supply chain disruptions, geopolitical events, or sudden commodity price swings can cause actual inflation to diverge from predictions. Consequently, inflation forecasts are updated frequently, and policymakers emphasize the importance of flexibility and contingency planning in their decision-making processes.
