Infinitesimalområdet, a term originating from mathematical discourse, refers to a conceptual region or quantity so small that it approaches zero, yet is not strictly zero itself. It is a foundational concept in calculus, where it is used to describe infinitesimally small changes in variables, often denoted by symbols like $dx$ or $dy$. These infinitesimals are crucial for defining derivatives, which represent instantaneous rates of change, and integrals, which represent the accumulation of these infinitesimally small quantities.

The historical development of infinitesimals is complex. Early pioneers like Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Isaac Newton utilized the notion of infinitesimals to develop calculus. However, their approach was met with philosophical challenges regarding the logical rigor of dealing with quantities that were both vanishingly small and non-zero. Critics, such as Bishop Berkeley, famously derided them as "the ghosts of departed quantities."

In the 19th century, mathematicians like Augustin-Louis Cauchy and Karl Weierstrass developed the rigorous framework of limits, which allowed calculus to be established on a firm logical foundation without relying on the intuitive but problematic concept of infinitesimals. Modern calculus primarily operates using the epsilon-delta definition of limits.

Despite the shift to limit-based calculus, the intuitive idea of infinitesimals remains a powerful pedagogical tool for understanding calculus concepts. Some non-standard analysis frameworks, developed in the 20th century by Abraham Robinson, have since provided a rigorous way to formalize and work with infinitesimals, demonstrating that their initial intuitive use was not entirely unfounded.
