Inertiaalmõõteseadmed, also known as inertial measurement units (IMUs), are devices that measure and report a body's specific force, angular rate, and sometimes orientation. These measurements are typically obtained using accelerometers and gyroscopes. Accelerometers detect linear acceleration, while gyroscopes measure angular velocity. IMUs can also incorporate magnetometers to determine heading.

The core components of an IMU are sensitive to motion. Accelerometers measure acceleration along one or more axes, allowing the device to sense changes in velocity. Gyroscopes measure rotation around one or more axes, indicating how fast the device is turning. By combining data from these sensors, an IMU can estimate the device's position, orientation, and velocity over time, even in the absence of external references like GPS signals.

IMUs are used in a wide variety of applications. In aviation and aerospace, they are crucial for navigation and flight control systems. In the automotive industry, they contribute to electronic stability control and advanced driver-assistance systems. Consumer electronics, such as smartphones and game controllers, utilize IMUs for motion sensing and user interface interactions. Robotics also heavily relies on IMUs for robot navigation, stabilization, and control.

The accuracy of an IMU depends on the quality of its sensors and the sophistication of its algorithms for sensor fusion and error correction. Over time, small errors in the sensor readings can accumulate, leading to drift in the estimated position or orientation. Advanced IMUs employ techniques like Kalman filtering to combine data from multiple sensors and external navigation aids to mitigate these errors and provide more reliable measurements.
