Indolialkaloidien

Indolialkaloidien, a Finnish term, translates to indole alkaloids. These are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic compounds containing a characteristic indole nucleus. The indole ring system is a bicyclic structure consisting of a six-membered benzene ring fused to a five-membered nitrogen-containing pyrrole ring. This core structure is found in many biologically active molecules, including the neurotransmitter serotonin and the amino acid tryptophan.

Indole alkaloids are synthesized by a wide variety of organisms, most notably plants, but also some fungi, bacteria, and marine animals. Their biosynthesis often begins with the amino acid tryptophan.
