IndiumTinOxid, often abbreviated as ITO, is a transparent conductive material composed of indium oxide doped with tin. It is a solid solution of indium oxide (In2O3) and tin dioxide (SnO2). The doping process, where tin atoms substitute for indium atoms in the indium oxide lattice, introduces free electrons, which are responsible for its electrical conductivity.

ITO is highly valued for its unique combination of optical transparency in the visible spectrum and electrical conductivity. This dual property makes it indispensable in a wide range of electronic devices. Its primary application is as a transparent electrode.

Key applications of ITO include touchscreens for smartphones, tablets, and computers, where it allows for both light transmission and electrical signal detection. It is also used in flat-panel displays such as LCDs and OLEDs, as well as in solar cells to collect generated electricity while allowing sunlight to pass through. Other uses include low-emissivity windows, anti-static coatings, and electrodes in various optical instruments. The deposition of ITO typically involves sputtering techniques, which allow for precise control over the film's thickness and properties. While ITO is the most common transparent conductive oxide, research continues into alternative materials due to the cost and scarcity of indium.
