Impressums

Impressums, or imprints, are legally required disclosures on websites and other online media that identify the entity responsible for the content and provide means of contact. They are intended to promote transparency and accountability for online publishers and, in many jurisdictions, to protect consumers.

In Germany, the obligation is grounded in the Telemediengesetz (TMG). An Impressum typically includes the provider’s name and postal address, a reachable email address or phone number, the legal form and registration of the company (such as the registration court and number), and, where applicable, the value-added tax identification number and the supervisory authority. For certain professionals and platforms, additional disclosures may be required.

In Austria, similar rules apply under the national electronic commerce and media regulations. A valid imprint should list the operator’s name, legal form, postal address, contact details, the company register or equivalent, and, if applicable, the VAT number and relevant supervisory authority. The exact scope can vary depending on the service and business activity.

Switzerland and other German-speaking regions also require clear identification of the site operator and contact information for many commercial or journalistic sites, though the specifics may differ by cantonal authority and service type. The term Impressum is commonly used in these contexts.

Practical guidance includes placing the imprint in a predictable, easily accessible location on every page (often in the footer) and ensuring the information is up to date. Non-compliance can lead to warnings, fines, or injunctive relief. Small private sites may be exempt in some cases, but many platforms adopt a standard Impressum to mitigate legal risk.
