The word "impasto" comes from the Italian word "impastare," meaning "to knead" or "to mix." This technique involves applying paint in a way that the texture of the paint itself becomes a significant element of the artwork.

In impasto, the paint is often applied directly from the tube or with a palette knife, creating a rich, three-dimensional effect.
