Immunudviklingen, often translated as immune development or immunogenesis, refers to the intricate process by which an organism establishes and matures its immune system. This development begins early in embryonic life and continues throughout an individual's lifespan, ensuring the body can effectively recognize and defend against a vast array of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, as well as abnormal self-cells like cancer.

The development involves the coordinated action of various organs and cell types. Key players include primary lymphoid organs, such as the bone marrow and thymus, where immune cells like lymphocytes (T cells and B cells) are born and educated. In the bone marrow, hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into all blood cell lineages, including those of the immune system. The thymus is crucial for the maturation and selection of T cells, ensuring they can distinguish between self and non-self.

Secondary lymphoid organs, such as lymph nodes, spleen, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), are where mature immune cells encounter antigens and initiate adaptive immune responses. This adaptive immunity is characterized by specificity and memory, allowing for a more potent and rapid response upon re-exposure to the same pathogen. The innate immune system, a more ancient and generalized defense mechanism, also plays a vital role from birth, providing immediate, non-specific protection. Immunudviklingen is a continuous process, with the immune system adapting and learning throughout life, a phenomenon often referred to as immune plasticity.
