Immuniseerivad

Immuniseerivad is a term derived from the Dutch word "immuniseren," meaning to immunize or vaccinate. It refers to the process of making an individual or population immune to a particular disease, typically through vaccination. Vaccination involves introducing a weakened or inactive form of a pathogen, or specific components of it, into the body. This exposure prompts the immune system to recognize the pathogen and develop a defense mechanism, such as producing antibodies. Should the individual later encounter the actual disease-causing agent, their immune system is prepared to fight it off, preventing or significantly reducing the severity of illness.

The concept of immunisation has been instrumental in public health, leading to the eradication or near-eradication of many devastating diseases like smallpox and polio. Immunisation programmes are widely implemented globally to protect individuals from infectious diseases and to achieve herd immunity, where a sufficiently high proportion of the population is immune, thereby protecting those who cannot be vaccinated. The term "immuniseerivad" can therefore describe the act of vaccinating, the substances used in vaccination, or the overall strategy of disease prevention through induced immunity. It is a cornerstone of modern preventive medicine.
