The term combines "imendumine" (meaning "to bewitch" or "to curse") and "kõveraid" (meaning "crooked" or "bent"), suggesting a form of preventive magic to ward off malevolent influences.

The practice was rooted in rural Estonian culture, where farmers believed that harmful spirits, witches, or envious individuals could cause illness or misfortune among their animals. To counteract these threats, farmers would perform rituals involving symbolic actions, such as tying knots in a rope or string while reciting protective verses. These knots were often left in a sacred or protected place, such as a tree or a specific corner of the farm, to bind away the potential harm.

Another common method involved the use of protective charms, such as iron objects or specific plants, which were believed to have inherent defensive properties. Some rituals also included the use of fire or water as purifying elements to cleanse the livestock and the surrounding environment. These practices were often carried out during seasonal transitions, such as the beginning of spring or autumn, when the boundary between the natural and supernatural worlds was thought to be thinner.
