Imagesframing

Imagesframing refers to the practice of composing a visual subject within a defined boundary to guide how the scene is perceived. In photography, cinema, and other visual media, framing involves where the subject sits in the frame, what appears around it, and how the edges of the image shape interpretation.

Techniques include using natural frames such as doorways or windows, creating environmental frames with foreground objects, and adjusting perspective through camera position, lens choice, and depth of field. Cropping and choosing a particular aspect ratio in post-production also affect framing. Compositional styles range from open frames with breathing space to tight frames that emphasize detail, and from symmetrical to off-center arrangements.

Framing serves several purposes: it directs attention, suggests relationships between subject and environment, conveys mood or scale, and controls narrative pace. It can create a frame-within-a-frame illusion, enhance storytelling through leading lines, or use negative space to impact balance and tension. Framing also carries ethical considerations when used in journalism or documentary contexts.

It is applied across photography, film, architecture, and digital media. In practice, framings are planned during shooting and refined through cropping and editing, with the choice of aspect ratio and framing style influencing how viewers perceive and remember the image.
