Ilmiökäsitteitä, or phenomenal concepts, refers to concepts that are directly tied to observable phenomena or experiences. These concepts are not abstract or theoretical in their origin but emerge from and are understood through our sensory perception and interaction with the world. They are the building blocks of our understanding of reality, describing things we can see, hear, touch, taste, or smell, as well as internal experiences like emotions or thoughts.

The development of phenomenal concepts is often an early stage in cognitive development. Children learn to identify and categorize objects and events based on their observable characteristics. For instance, the concept of "red" is a phenomenal concept, derived from the visual experience of a particular color. Similarly, "hot" is understood through the sensation of heat.

In contrast to theoretical concepts, which might explain underlying mechanisms or unobservable entities (like gravity or atoms), phenomenal concepts focus on the "what" of experience rather than the "why" or "how" behind it. However, the relationship between phenomenal and theoretical concepts is dynamic. As our understanding of phenomena deepens, theoretical concepts can emerge to explain them, and conversely, theoretical knowledge can shape how we perceive and interpret phenomena.

The study of phenomenal concepts is relevant in fields such as psychology, linguistics, and philosophy of mind, as it sheds light on how humans acquire knowledge, form categories, and construct meaning from their experiences. It highlights the fundamental role of direct experience in shaping our mental models of the world.
