Ilmavälisten

Ilmavälisten, also known as *ilma- ja avaruuspuolustus* (air and space defence) in Finnish, refers to the Finnish military’s efforts to protect national airspace and space assets from threats such as aerial attacks, missile strikes, and potential space-based threats. The concept integrates air defence systems, early warning capabilities, and coordination with allied forces to ensure national security.

Finland’s air defence capabilities have evolved significantly since the Cold War, when the threat of Soviet aerial and missile attacks was a primary concern. The country maintains a network of radar stations, surface-to-air missile systems, and fighter aircraft to monitor and deter intrusions. The Finnish Air Force operates modern platforms like the F/A-18 Hornet and is actively exploring upgrades, including the potential acquisition of new fighter jets to enhance its air superiority.

In recent years, the focus has expanded to include space defence, as satellite technology becomes increasingly vital for military, economic, and civilian operations. Finland collaborates with international partners, such as NATO, to strengthen its ability to detect and respond to threats in both the atmosphere and space.
