Ilmavuotokerroimina refers to the process of constructing or repairing water supply systems to prevent or mitigate the effects of air pressure fluctuations in pipes. This type of fluctuation can cause the collapse of pipes, structure damage to buildings, and unusable water pressure.

There are several types of air water pressure fluctuations that can affect pipes. One of these is known as a pneumatic shock wave. This type of shock wave is caused by sudden changes in air pressure. When the water column in a pipe must be held at a higher pressure than the surrounding air, any change in air pressure can cause the water column to expand or contract.

The likelihood of premature equipment failures can be minimized by ensuring that pressure controls for a properly installed vacuum breaker remain on the backflow side of the valve after water supply is restored. Design requirements will typically include avoidance of closely spaced as- available tank locations. These design goals serve to help minimize the frequency and velocity of air water pressure shocks. In practice, this may include staggered installation of elevated vacuum tanks.
