Illuistroiden is a fictional class of small solar-system bodies characterized by surface features that produce an illusion-like iridescence under certain lighting. The concept is used in speculative astronomy and science fiction worldbuilding to explore how microstructure, composition, and illumination influence observed color and brightness on small bodies.

Origin and naming: The term illuistroiden combines a notion of illusion with the plural suffix common to asteroid-like objects. It first appeared in educational and speculative discussions in the early 21st century as a way to discuss complex surface scattering without asserting real observations.

Physical characteristics: In the hypothetical model, illuistroiden range from tens of meters to a few kilometers in diameter. Their surfaces are envisioned as highly textured with glassy or microcrystalline silica-rich crusts, producing strong, angle-dependent reflectance. The observable effect is a shimmering, iridescent glow that changes with the observer's location and illumination angle, not due to fluorescence but to light-scattering microstructure.

Orbit and distribution: In imagined scenarios, illuistroiden could inhabit distant regions of the main asteroid belt or Trojan-like niches, with semi-major axes roughly 2.4 to 3.5 AU and low to moderate inclinations. They are not tied to a single dynamical family and would exist as a sparse population compared with ordinary asteroids.

Observational status and significance: There are no confirmed detections of illuistroiden; the concept is primarily used to illustrate how surface texture and composition influence albedo and color in small bodies.
