Ikkeoptimal is a Norwegian adjective used to describe something that is not optimal; it may refer to solutions, designs, processes, or decisions that do not achieve the best possible outcome within given constraints. The term is common in everyday Norwegian as well as in technical discourse, particularly in fields dealing with optimization, operations research, software development, and project evaluation.

Origins and usage: The word is formed from ikke (not) and optimal. In many contexts, especially technical ones, it signals that a result is feasible but not the best possible under the current conditions. The distinction is often qualitative; ikkeoptimal is contrasted with optimal and with approximate or near-optimal solutions. In practice, an ikkeoptimal choice may still be acceptable if it balances factors such as cost, time, or risk.
