Ihotila is a Finnish-language concept that translates roughly to the condition or state of the skin. It describes the overall health, appearance, and function of the epidermis and adjacent structures, including hydration, texture, elasticity, coloration, and barrier integrity. In everyday language and clinical discussions, ihotila is used as a descriptive umbrella term rather than a single diagnosis.

Common descriptors of ihotila include kuiva iho (dry skin), rasvainen iho (oily skin), sekai iho (combination skin), and herkkä iho (sensitive skin). Abnormal ihotila may involve redness, flaking, roughness, itching, or visible lesions. Factors that influence ihotila range from environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity to exposure to irritants or allergens, skincare routines, aging, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition. Chronic skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis (ekseema), psoriasis, rosacea, or fungal infections can significantly alter ihotila.

Assessment is primarily clinical: a health professional observes the skin and takes a history. Additional tests are used selectively to rule out infection or diagnose a specific condition when needed.

Management aims to restore and protect the skin barrier. This typically involves regular use of moisturizers (preferably fragrance-free and containing humectants and ceramides), avoiding known irritants, and practicing sun protection. Treating underlying conditions may require therapies such as topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors for inflammation, and antibiotics or antifungals for associated infections, depending on the diagnosis.
