Igemepõletikke, also known as gingivitis, refers to the inflammation of the gums. It is a common condition, often characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gum tissue. The primary cause of gingivitis is the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If plaque is not removed regularly through brushing and flossing, the bacteria produce toxins that irritate the gums, leading to inflammation.

Symptoms of gingivitis can include gums that appear red or purplish, feel tender to the touch, and bleed easily, especially during tooth brushing or flossing. In some cases, bad breath may also be present. Gingivitis is generally considered a reversible condition, and it can be treated effectively by improving oral hygiene practices. Regular and thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums helps to remove plaque and reduce inflammation.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis affects not only the gums but also the bone and tissues that support the teeth. This can lead to tooth loosening, gum recession, and eventually tooth loss. Therefore, early detection and management of gingivitis are crucial for maintaining oral health. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are recommended to prevent and manage gum inflammation.
